Obviously there is a lot of spam here including mine, but let me just comment on rising transport costs. Some WP idiot said the solution (which was proposed by the WP) is to raise wages by retraining etc etc. Of course retraining to combat structural unemployment is important, but the idea that this is an appropriate response to rising costs is healthy -- the chain of causation is far too obvious; it will be an extremely sharp and predictable policy instrument.
Have you ever thought of the fact that public transport is a NATURAL MONOPOLY? Given the reasonable cosy relationship between the govt regulators and the SMRT and SBS and other public transport companies, the amount of industry regulation is simply too sufficient, thus resulting in maintaining costs for the consumer. Since public transport is a natural monopoly, the welfare loss will be LESSER if the monopoly aims to maximise services (which is what the PAP wants them to do) than if they were non-profit-satisficers, perhaps with govt regulation imposing a de facto limit on their profits. This is basic economics. The fact that these simple facts have been addressed by the PAP merely shows that their main intention is to control profits for the public transport companies, thus keeping their resident and operators happy.

Some good comments so far. Personally, I'm neither pro-opposition nor pro-PAP. I believe we should be pro-people. We shld choose the best for the government and hence for the people. If this opposition candidate in your opinion is better than the PAP vote for him and Vice Versa.
Sometimes our emotions and maybe loyalty can get the better of our wisdom. As a result, we have biased on who we are voting.

Singapore's problem is no longer at the bottom of the pyramid. There will always be some people with those problems but in general we have moved on. PAP claim that we are a first world country and they have a first world govt.
If thats the case they should start looking at satisfying our needs further up the the pyramid. What do we want now?
A free press? freedom from our shackles? respectable minimum wages for those in the lower pay categories?
Basic necessities are still needed but aren't we a first world country after all? Are we only still focused on providing these basic necessities?
How does creating new jobs with a pay of $800/month help us achieve a higher state of consciousness?
We thank the PAP for giving us our bread and butter, but now we'd like some ham and cheese.
Every day we hear of our great economic performance. I would like to compare perhaps, minimum wages 10 years ago to minimum wages now.. Someone tell me the figures so i can be discredited. Our cost of living has increased but i am not sure that the minimum wages have increased to match.
Its not a lie that we wouldn't be where we are today without the PAP. The country is beautiful. But it would be more beautiful if we could have the freedom to really "live" in this oasis rather than to be slaves in it.
best case scenario - pap remains in government, but 20 opposition. still got their 2/3 to vote mah.

I think alot of u are missing the point. Someone said the PAP is not a party, its a State. Monopoly on power and Singaporean society as a whole. Probably true.

To those who criticize opposition voters for wanting to run PAP out of power: I don't think any rational voter, regardless of political affliation, foresees PAP being out of power (i.e. holding <50% majority of the 84 seats) in the next 20 years at least. We only want a stronger, credible opposition to check on things that can go out of wack when there is absolute control by one party - things like NKF scandal, decision to have casino, HDB upgrade priorities, CPF contributions etc, things in which there are significant disagreements and should not be swept away because PAP has near absolute control of parliament. We're not talking of opposition MP newbies making a clean sweep at the polls, suddenly being in power, becoming govt Ministers. I'm only referring to just a greater number of opposition MPs, positions which do not require people with genius IQ or scholar credentials, just people with empathy for constituents and willing to take time to solve their problems. We can leave Minister-ship to PAP for now. Remember in the 60-80's when PAP still had MPs who did not have university degrees, who could comfortably rub shoulders with their constituents, who were always available for their constituents? Now the opposition has credible people who can do this just as capably, because nowadays many PAP MPs seem too 'elite' or too busy because they have other professions. With a tested group of candidates, the opposition can cask aside perceptions that they are incompetent and recruit more capable people into their ranks and work on capturing more seats in the next elections. Reiterating what Low Thia Khiang said at a rally, we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket, relying 100% on PAP being able to maintain a non-corrupt, efficient and smart one-party govt for eternity. If one day it disintegrates (which can occur from a variety of reasons I can think of, such as huge scandals involving party higher ups or more plausibly, a power struggle from within), we need to have a credible opposition, strong and experienced enough to take over the reins of the country, should this event happens. It's a similar analogy to investing - do you buy stocks from just one single company in the hope it is worth tons of money in 20 years' time? Only a fool would do that. Most investors would diversify to create a lower risk portfolio. I say do the same if you want to invest in the future of S'pore for our children and grandchildren.
To those who blindly vote PAP because they "have done so much for S'pore" - that was in the past, they have already garnered votes that kept them in absolute power till today. History will give them the proper credit that they deserve and that is enough. You are casting your vote for your MP for today and the future (at least the next 5 years), and for your children and their children. 1) Singapore's brand of politics is a very economical kind, one that places economic prosperity over all other things. This means that as long as economic prosperity is maintained, people will stay happy. They practise a kind of soft-authoritarian regime. our god-father had claimed too that Singapore was never a democracy.
Second, have you compared Singapore's living standard to those third world poor countries?
2) This issue is non-pertinent. A responsible government should provide for ALL its citizens regardless of their political inclination. What you are trying to say is I guess, that the PAP has done a good job in bringing us up to par with First World economies. And Vendetta is not disputing that.
Third, did you know that HK and Taiwan urban living standard is more stressful than Singapore?
This again is irrelevant. However, if one is unhappy with transport fare hikes in HK, they could have peaceful demonstrations to make their point known, if there was labour wages disputes, they could organize a strike. Here, once you get into groups of 5, the Ang Chia comes...

4) You don't have to be to those places to study our wages as compared to them. You have reliable sources from the Economists, from Bloomberg, from UN websites, etc. And from what we can see, yes, Singapore has a high statistics. But that's an AVERAGE number. If you learn basic math in school, you would know that if there are many large numbers and many small numbers, we will have an average showing a respectable number.

In school, I was shown statistics that says the PAP earns a helluva lot of money. More than the US president and his cabinet, more than the UK PM and his parliament. Do I think the Singapore government is better in quality than the US and UK government? I dare not say. But they ARE the worlds 2 SUPERPOWERS.
Sixth, do you know why LKY wanted to sue some candidates?
It depends on how you see it. There are many ways to interpret it. And frankly, to say that sueing them might be a way of putting them out of politics is not going too far. However, I have one point that I wanna make too: i.e. Why do these politicians give them a chance to sue them? On this question, I would rather not take a stand.
Seventh, do you know why PAP need to be dominated and authoritarian the whole political powers in Singapore?
According to your logic, we are vulnerable and small, that's why we need a strong government with a strong mandate to rule for success. Firstly, you assumed that democracy and freedom is going to cause chaos. Secondly, you have a kind of seige mentality that we Singaporeans have all been indoctrinated with. Being small has its advantages. And regardless of whether you are authoritarian or democratic, you should be able to harness it. And I would prefer it to be democratic.

Yes, we are all having a better living than before. We do not stay in kampungs anymore. But what is the effect? Almost 40% of people do not pay income taxes. That means they earn less than $2000 a month. Many people are poor, and we in our ivory HDB towers do not see them. More needs to be done and the degrading means testing is not the way to do it.

Again, how do you explain that the transport companies have record profits yet have to raise transport fares? You and I may afford it since it is just 1 cent, but for many others who earn only $3 a day, $0.10 is a lot.
And again, there are so many help schemes, you scream, but who knows about it? Do you? Do I? I only claim to know a little, and that was from researching about it. Those ah-mahs and ah-kongs won't know anything about it in their 1 room flat.

Foreign companies to create more jobs? Let's take the casino for example: 2 foreign casinos... would you as a boss want to employ a singaporean cleaner for $1000 a month? or would you employ a Filipino, Sri Lankan, Bangladesh, Indonesian cleaner for $800 or less a month? With globalization and cheap labour from neighboring countries, we have a reason to be afraid. Our futures are at stake. It is only reasonable to worry and to consider if PAP is going to continue its success. I don't deny they have done a good job. But good governance is not easy. A good government is supposed to look after the welfare of ALL its citizens, it must be transparent and open to scrutiny, it must be separated from the judiciary, i.e. the legislative, executive and the judiciary should stand on their own, and of course, people should not fear their government.
starlandliu, I applaud your keen-ness in politics at a tender age as compared to political apathy of many others, but I do wish that you would read more widely, get your sources not just from SPH, CNA but also from Bangkok Post, AFP, Reuters, etc. there are many other places to get your sources, such that you don't get a biased view of what is actually happening...

Is the opposition votes rose? 66.6% for PAP means to 43.4% for opposition and that is decrease for opposition parities. First of all, I thank you for your non-reply for my comments post. I don't know why you never replied to my comments post, but I shall leave it as that.
Secondly, to assume that all media reports are untrue in the local media is wrong. To assume that all media reports are accurate is wrong too. First of all, I would not dispute the accuracy of local media on foreign reports. They are excellent. Yet on local coverage, it is lacking. Dr Chee won a democracy award which was supported by the UN. It got limited coverage, somewhere in the latter pages of the papers. Yet when some Singaporean scientist found out glowing zebrafish, they got 3rd page reports. Both reports are accurate. Yet, the coverage is different. The former had a small column less than your palm size, the latter, a half page report. I am not accusing the local reports, but there seems to be some biasness in reporting. All I am saying is there are always media biasness, regardless of where you go. Like how Times and Newsweek have different agendas.
Lastly, you championing the causes of History is laudable. Yet you and many others tend to forget History is a record written by winners, not losers. Many tend to take History for granted. Just take Chinese History for example, Liu Bang was a mountain bandit and Xiang Yu was a noble man. Yet historically, Liu Bang was a good emperor, Xiang Yu was remembered as a cruel conqueror. Closer to home, my secondary school's history and social studies textbooks only showed me half of Singapore's history, from Raffles to MM Lee Kuan Yew. Only in institutes of higher learning to I get to know another famous person in Singapore's history: Chia Thye Poh (I wonder if he is a familiar name amongst the young). Frankly, my generation only learned that Singapore's history was centred around LKY's greatness from the books. I almost didn't know Goh Keng Swee, S. Rajaratnam, Toh Chin Chye etc. who did much to contribute to Singapore as well. All I am saying is that history is written by people. People have different agendas. If you had a time machine, and you went back to whichever historical events you like, you will have a different interpretation of what happened. John, Luke, Judas all had different gospels of Jesus Christ. Case in point.
Just for your consideration. Maybe you should start to listen first and then think through your replies before you answer them. Insisting on your own points isn't going to help this debate in any way. If your points are logical and acceptable, I and many others here can accept them. For Xiang Yu, he was naive and hot temper, he constantly demanded too much of his army, making them desperate and surrendered to Liu Bang.
