seriously, regarding malaysian chinese being discriminated, it is a real issue there. I have malaysian friends who score straight a's and yet have to pay for their own tertiary education compared to the bumis who did moderately but getting scholarships to exotic places. Singaporeans are simply too sheltered by their own system of meritocracy that they do not understand the situations outside. The grass is not always greener on the other side. You guys may see patches of greener pastures, but do you think it is really better out there? No doubt there are things that suck in singapore but we have to realise that these are here for a reason. There is always a bigger picture and this bigger picture may not benefit everyone of us, but let us at least be glad that we still have food on our table in the end of the day.

Quite despairing to read the comments here. Out of 325 comments, only like 20 have some semblance of maturity.
Of those that agree with what Rockson has said, how many people have stayed overseas?
I stayed in the UK for 4 years. These are my observations.
1) They are able to put up peaceful demonstrations, that cause hundreds of police to be deployed, and stop traffic, and achieve nothing usually.
2) I get to wait an hour for a local feeder bus, on many occasions. While waiting, the Ang Moh smiles to me patiently, because they are used to it and expect it. They bitch about it, but with a sense of humour
3) I call for a taxi, and the taxi stands me up. It's frustrating.
4) The cars are quite cheap, but the roads in the city centre where I stayed were closed to prevent congestion. There aren't many parking lots anyway. In general, most of the population prefer to take public transportation to avoid the hassle. This could possibly be made easier due to the cool weather.
5) The train system there is old. Much older. Suffering frequent breakdowns. It is musty in the trains, and worse to take than the SMRT.
6) You pay about S$4 for a train ride in central london, which is smaller than Singapore.
7) You pay 17.5% in GST
8) They recently introduced a CBD like zoning in london because congestion was a problem.
9) It costs about S$30+ for a one-hour return bus ride to and from London from another town.
10) You walk in the rain most of the time, because there are no sheltered walkways, no sheltered pavements.
11) Their workers get to go on strike, and the train network is shut down for the day.
It's not wrong to complain or suggest improvements to ways of doing things, but to condemn the Singapore Govt is way too simplistic. People leaving comments here seem to fail to realise the consequences of what they are asking for.
Cheaper cars, less ERP? More congestion. Maybe no need to drive to town anymore.
If Rockson thought his entry is meant to entertain, it ceases to be entertaining when so many people buy the joke as reality.

What's worrying were those one liners praising the contents like, "Great social critique, keep it up." "Damn good points! I support u ah!" Seems to give the idea that they agree with everything said.
For those people who asked what the government has done good, let's see.
1) We were praised internationally for the way we handled SARS. For those of you who didn't get SARS, and were still able to go out without great apprehension because of the tight measures, do you remember?
2) For those of you who have gone to the A&E or sought medical help, and did not have to wait 2 days for your appointment, are you aware that elsewhere, in UK, you have to make an appointment with your doctor almost a week in advance if I recall correctly. Medical consultation is free, but you have to pay for your medication. Nobody is denied treatment, just takes too long in my opinion. Not sure about US, but I've heard that you need medical insurance which many people cannot afford. The govt has ensured that you have accesible, affordable and timely medical treatment for most simple ailments.
3) Our dengue control measures are one of the best in the world. Even the US National Institute of Health says so. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_27240.html
The list can easily go on about house ownership, efficient and effective public transport system, low crime etc.
Do Singaporeans remember why MM LKY cried when Singapore separated from Malaysia? We weren't expected to survive. We managed to overcome adversity for the past 40 years not through a stroke of luck, but through every thing that has been done.
It didn't come without a cost of course, one of which is "political freedom". To be able to attract investors, we need political stability.
I don't disagree with the outcry for Buangkok MRT station to be opened, but given the baton to run it, with all the information, I suspect that you'd benefit the thousands of residents in that area but possibly increase the costs elsewhere. Would 4.2 million Singaporeans be willing to go through a fare hike for Buangkok? Possibly the only complaint would be that the planning of Buangkok station was insufficient resulting in it being built prematurely and some public funds being wasted.
Ministers drawing too much salary? Are you confident that you drop the salary, you'll get good ministers....? This one quite arguable, probably a thin balance. I don't believe that there are that many altruistic and capable people out there willing to slog their ass off for the masses who complain and complain about their governance.
Perhaps we want stronger laws for employment so that less 40 year olds will be retrenched? What if they were non-performing? What if they were your boss (because they've been around longer), but were slow and incapable, but the law protected them and allow them to work? Draw higher pay than you because they got family to feed and you don't? Has the govt tried to improve employment in Singapore without creating such a situation over over-protection? WDA? Can we improve? Should we start on the effectiveness of WDA then? Rather than bitch on unemployment rate?
There is much room for improvement. Let's start by listing things we can do something about, rather than things that we can't do anything about.
Oh, and on a side note, it's usually the citizens who cry out loud resulting in reactions from the government.
1) Racist blogger being charged was a result of a '999' call to the police. Technically, it is against the law to be racist. Do you expect to call '999' to report a crime and be told the police will not investigate?
2) Investigation into white elephant was a result of a complaint received. Another police report by member of public(?)
All these information were available, but people choose to read it as an oppresive govt. Why not read it as an oppressive population?
You think it's oppresive? You want the anti-racist law to be abolished? You think it's time? That our society has reached new heights of tolerance and the law is no longer necessary? If you think so, do some research and present a convincing case to the ministry. That would be cool. Maybe something can then happen.
NKF was condemned by the public. Donations were made by the public. News was published years back of the way NKF was being run by SPH. The govt gets the blame(?) Why not blame yourselves for not reading up on NKF and their way of donation garnering before donating? Or are you even one who doesn't donate (ie. no business with NKF) yet complains about NKF?
I think there're also quite a few good comments along the way that pointed out that govt are not solely to blame for many things eg. Nicoll Highway, Casino, Petrol price.
Thanks to those who take time to read this comment and digest it. The rant could go on and on. It's difficult to present a balanced view when people who come here are out to see the government being blasted, and anyone who speaks up is deemed to be a crony. If this continues, we have a good idea of the self-destructive nature of our society.

Although I agree with many of the points raised by the last few person...I cannot help but be reminded of something quite scary.
In China, they're also clamping down hard on high profile bloggers or forums that are too vocal in their opinions on the government.
After arresting those responsible, a special team of hackers/experts/writers then pretends to be member of the public & post on those sites citing how it is wrong to be so one sided in criticizing the gov, then either post arguements or list out examples or comparisons that shows the gov in a good light.
Nonetheless, I agree that the big picture is that the gov are doing well on large & important issues. But for small things & tiny mistakes, the gov seems unable to satisfy the public & may be seen as ungracious.
I think we were brought up with people expecting the best from us. So naturally, we'll want the best from others as well.
But nothing's perfect, especially when it comes to running a country.
We're paying the MPs well...but civil servants? When incompetent or disgrunted civil servants makes a mistake, the gov get the blame, since most people would even know who that civil servant was.
& I guess the gov knows that it better to just ignore such petty complaints...but what normally happens, is when a complain goes unanswer or no defensive arguement is put forth, then more & more people will join in & rant about it.

Why does a Singaporean need to travel so far (to Aust. US, UK) to experience any 'hardship'? There is enough corruption, discrimination, bloodshed, disease, unemployment, poverty, crime in neighboring ASEAN countries to perfectly illustrate the point of how fortunate Singaporeans are to have such an excellent country.
I take the Suntec shuttle to work from CityHall every morning. The Padang.... truly truly a hallmark of well-oiled cogs of efficiency at work, I say! It's amazing how stuff can get done up & swiftly taken apart so efficiently - from the riggings of the NDP parade to the many subsequent events held there... Nokia Movie under the stars & the Cyber Games tournament. Grass that has died due to the NDP sheets put over them, are quickly re-implanted & watered with sprinklers... impressive!
I don't recall ever seeing anything like this anywhere else in the world! That's just me....

You've made many assumptions in the way you see the issues. That's not very healthy.
1)Why should SARS "not come to Singapore in the first place?" SARS caught the world by surprise. No government could've guarded against it, Singapore was just unlucky to be hit before the deadly nature of the virus was made known.
2)On doctor to patient ratio, why is it that you don't acknowledge that it is a good ratio because of efforts by our government to ensure that there is such a high ratio? Or the failure of other governments to ensure that there is a high ratio?
Your comment reinforces my concern that many people in our society lack maturity of thought. Thankfully, after my first comment, there is only one comment like yours.
Uh, for the record, I'm not MIW. LOL. I try to be objective. If you ask me, there are areas where our govt did cock-up, but usually these are on hindsight. We want to criticise on current issues so that improvements can be made.
Easily, to name a few:
1)LTA bridge that paralysed man due to poor planning.
2)I somewhat agree that ERP is a bit excessive, especially the 6-8pm on CTE(AMK) but it's inconclusive because there are people who benefit from it.
3)Poor regulation of speed limits along some roads.
Before someone flames me, I'll say that I'd originally wanted to bitch about it, but after thinking about it, I wrote in to the LTA to find out what they were doing for points 1) and 3). The answers were decent. Probably if I want to achieve more, I'd really need to consider being an MIW. Or set up a new party. Either way, that's the way to get more things done. =)
What can be improved? Maybe with sufficient research, we want the death penalty on drugs to be eased for certain types of drugs? Slightly improved labour laws to give limited protection to employment? (Not without a price).
I think if people think a small country is therefore easy to run, look at Brunei. Despite having large oil resources, are they doing better than us?
Actually, the fact that we are small may mean that administratively, we are easy to govern. But we are by no means an easy country to run. Think about the "Bubble Tea" syndrome. In 1965, what we could offer the world, our neighbouring countries could have easily copied us and offered at a cheaper price. Who knows the first Bubble Tea entrepeneur? There's actually no logical explanation why we should succeed when the odds were against us then. Zoom to 2005. Are the odds still against us? I think so. What can we offer the world today, that the neighbouring countries cannot copy and do better? Financial hub? Medical facilities? Casino? Educational hub? If they wanted, give them 20 years, you think they can't each set up a hub that's bigger and better than ours? You think their population cannot produce better doctors, bankers, teachers and facilities than ours?
I worry about Singapore's future in the long term. That's why I still think MM cried because of the uncertainty of it all. Maybe he did cry because of perceived personal failure, but no one will ever know. I agree that there aren't many altruistic people out there. Some people may say that MM's objective is power hunger (which I don't refute as possible). On a personal level though, I'd like to think that he cared for society, and take him as an example to be a great man.
Why'd I come to Rockson's blog if I don't support him? Because he's popular, with mass appeal. It's always good to see what the people think and support. It's also good to know the other sides of the arguments, especially if they are well thought out and constructive. I acknowledge that sometimes he raises valid issues in an attractive way, that there is unemployment in Singapore. But the next question is usually not asked. Is the govt aware? Are they trying to do something about it? Is it enough? Better ways? Avenues to raise it up?
Simple logic. Rockson criticises govt. If only supporters come to read, the govt will never hear the voices. Then this blog is useless. We should always encourage non-supporters to provide a balanced view to things.
For once, I'd like to hear Rockson say that he wrote letter to the #$@# Minister to suggest some brilliant improvement to society and the %#^&*# Minister was not receptive or something like that. At least, we then know that it's not that he never tried. Then again, maybe that's too boring for most people and they'd either go "Yawn" or ask for something more interesting about his horse.

I am one who came from poor family, worked part-time during polytechnic days, studied part-time degree ie- slogged my way through life. In the end working in a job that pays 0.003% of peanuts with not much career prospects,etc etc.
I guess Singapore have many things that people may be unhappy about- but the most important thing is to live life in the face of adversity.
I dare say the bulk of us Singaporeans are living life much much better than most people in other countries. Instead of complaining our lot- we should be working hard (and smart too!) to improve ourselves.
Although Cinderella Man is just a movie- I think the movie is inspiring on how one man manages to overcome hardships in life.
I may be poor, but I do enjoy the simple pleasures in life, such as surfing the net- like now! How many people in the world can't afford a computer- or for that matter, a education?
There is no such thing as a level playing field. we all are masters of our own destinies to create our own path.
By the way- I am a neutral when it comes to politics, etc.

1) Racist blogger being charged was a result of a '999' call to the police. Technically, it is against the law to be racist.
